"The idea for these clay sculptures
has been waiting for the right time, it seems to me, to be realised.
I came across the Japanese ceramics called 'Haniwa' many years ago.
Around that time I was interested in Egyptian artifacts connected
to ancient burial customs and through this discovered that the Japanese
in 6th century AD had developed the custom of encircling the base
of their burial mounds of the deceased rulers with hundreds of cylinders
made of clay to help reduce erosion of the earth. Over time these
cylinders took on a variety of shapes to do with the life of the
people, ie a warrior in armour, a house, a dog, a horse and the
one I chose to develop in my work; the human figure."
