Victoria Turner

The Planet Series

These paintings have evolved from stones found on the beaches of the North and South coasts of West Penwith in Cornwall. Imagine the coasts where the mighty Atlantic Ocean meets the granite shores of England, crashing and eroding the rocks that stop it's onward march. Each stone has its unique story to tell.

I begin by studying them closely to extract their different properties of texture and colour, to find out how they are made and to explode them into a different, Macrocosmic, universe. The process of painting is driven by each different stone to explore their inner workings further.

As a result of this process I have begun to unfold new dimensions of scale, physics and imagination in which to find inspiration. Some of the planets continue their evolution into the quantum world of the atom where strange and wonderful things can happen. Imagine yourself being drawn across the event horizon from the realm of the super giant to the Microcosmos of the vanishingly small. These paintings invite you to wonder if the world really exists as we perceive it or is our universe merely an Alice in Wonderland illusion.
