Strong colours and strident marks are for me the very essence of what I enjoy about painting. I'm fascinated by the juxtaposition of marks the spatial complexity that is created as some colours come forward and others recede. I would liken the process of painting to developing a kind of vocabulary of intuitive mark making, using shapes/forms and colours which hold a particular innate resonance. When I place a mark on the canvas it compels a response to balance a colour or form to agitate or calm.

I work in acrylic, laying the canvas on the floor. This allows me the freedom to get around the image and apply the paint liberally without it running off the surface, in this way the painted mark retains the detail of the dribbles and splashes and nuisances of detail. This tangible record of the energy and dynamic of its application is a very important element within the work.

Lots of things from the visual world around me inspire, but I do not want to make copies of them rather use them as a starting point. The work is about the dialogue I have with the paint and the marks I make within the confines of the canvas.

As a pulsating living human being I believe abstraction and painting provides the best means to communicate the energy and exuberance of being alive and if I can create a piece of work that captures that and it can speak to the viewer then I think it is worth pursuing.
