Sam Jukes
The works I create are an amalgamation of my love of abstract painting, paint and a longstanding interest in sound.
They have evolved from paintings about atmosphere and environment to being concerned with the effects of sound, the different depths and movement of noise and the feelings that different sound conveys.
I think of my paintings as abstract interpretations, personal representations of soundscapes.
“Like a landscape, a soundscape is simultaneously a physical environment and a way of perceiving that environment; it is both a world and a culture constructed to make sense of that world.”
Alain Corbin, Village Bells NY 1994
There is a very wide base influence on my work, artists such as Mark Francis, Fiona Rae, Dave Allen, Anish Kapoor, and an endless number of musicians and composers, as well as the many sounds from the environment around me, which provide inspiration.
There is an intricate network of methods behind my work; in my paintings there is a personal logic of response and evolution within each piece, a calculated play of colour and vocabulary of marks and methods of applying paint.
Their physical construction comprises of firstly graphite drawing, which then has a tonal oil glazes applied over the top, this sequence may be repeated several times before the desired textures and richness is achieved. Then I paint further layers of marks into the image, which exist in conversation with the underlying layers. Once these layers have dried and cured, the paintings receive ‘the pour', an application of clear resin, which at times can be over an inch thick. Finally, some of the works receive a final layer of marks painted over the surface continuing the conversation with then earlier layers.
The act of encapsulating the paintings in resin has an emotional effect, and the visual quality of preserving the moment. Much as photography capturers a split second in time, I feel the resin enables the same quality but for an interpretation of sound.
