FIGURATIVELY SPEAKING

In my paintings I have mainly been inspired by Iyengar yoga poses, as they create unusual positions and interesting compositions. The poses create different stretches, tensions and shadows of the figure's muscles and form, which are not usually found in the static figure, along with an exceptional visual energy that transforms well onto the canvas.

I use influences from my everyday life in Cornwall, using the coastal landscape and seascape to influence my work and use of colour.

I find the use of colour a very key element to my paintings, to create different atmospheres to suit the specific pose and mood of the figure. I work using acrylics, which suits my very fluent, gestural, sketchy style, using the build-up of vibrant layers of paints with the merging and dripping of colours to differentiate contrasting spaces.

I am currently in my second year studying Architecture at Oxford Brookes University, I find it a very similar process to my painting, which allows me to use creativity in a three-dimensional structural sense.

I have found figure painting to be the most interesting and challenging subject matter to paint and bring to life. Having taken a few life drawing classes as part of my A-level Art at Truro College, I immediately felt a dramatic progress in all my artwork.

My artwork has always been a key part of my life since a very young age and now that I am 19 years of age, I find the process of painting a pleasurable form of relaxation and energetic expression. I look forward to developing and improving my artwork in future years and am grateful to have this exhibition opportunity.
