Nik Strangelove
Born in London in 1970 Nik grew up in Oman and Singapore. He began taking photographs when he was 16. Whilst studying for his degree he worked as the Picture Editor for The London Student newspaper. In 1994 he was awarded the Guardian/NUS Student Photographer of the Year Award. He was again nominated for this prize in 1995.
After graduation Nik worked as a freelance photographer specialising in available-light location portraiture and reportage. Amongst his clients were magazines (DJ, The Wire), national newspapers (The Independent, The Express on Sunday) and private commissions. In 1996 and again in 2004 the National Portrait Gallery in London purchased some of his portrait work, including Eddie Izzard, Tariq Ali, John Hegley and Corin Redgrave. Nik has also written articles for The British Journal of Photography, Professional Photographer and The Guardian. In 2000 he relocated from London to Cornwall and now concentrates on his personal photographic projects.
Nik's work is a blend of strong tonal contrasts and unusual viewpoints that create surprising shapes and spaces. Details are emphasised into lives of their own, scenes empty of all but the forms created by light, texture and shadow. He makes us aware of the amount of textural variety there is in the world around us.
Through his photography Nik attempts to open the viewer's eyes to the strangeness, variety and intensity of the world we pass through each day, looking but perhaps not seeing.
