Gill Turner
My last body of work has been about urban environments influenced by Cornish towns. Essentially figurative and narrative it has been described as ‘quirky' and ‘humorous' and I hope I have retained something of this in these latest paintings.
A recent move to from Chacewater to Perranporth has inspired new work in which I aim to synthesise the abstract with the figurative and to create paintings which, although contemporary in style, evoke an atmosphere of a timeless, almost nostalgic Cornwall at a time when much of it is becoming increasingly sophisticated and urbanised.
Unashamedly archaic symbols of an almost forgotten age are sometimes incorporated, such as Punch and Judy or Saucy Postcards and represent the figurative side of my work along with shapes and patterns suggestive of buckets and spades, toy boats, light houses etc. I work in oil paint, usually on canvas: however I don't like to be too dominant when it comes to the use of materials. I want the colour and images to work together, making them open to interpretation, yet always familiar.
A recurrent theme in these paintings might be summed up in the words of the memorable song” Oh I do like to be beside the seaside…..”
