Catherine Knight

"My work explores the space of the car interior, a neutral space within which stories unfold and personal narratives are relayed. Working from film stills, I want my paintings to contain a feeling of 'something just about to happen'. The car interior is a space used constantly by film makers as a device to move characters around but is rarely found in painting. In the first series of paintings I have borrowed images from the film 'Morvern Callar'. I then went on to film my own journeys in cars and my recent work has been made from my own footage.

The contrast between the car interior and the outside world is of constant fascination to me. The idea of being on a journey between two places is also appealing as it is where you can view your life from a distance and experience new perspectives.

I have recently been working with car wing mirrors themselves. Disembodied from their usual function they become curious objects and I have experimented with painting onto the mirror surface."
