Angela Holyoak
"My work is in direct response
to the physicality, colour and movement of nature, in which I see
the curves of the human form. I work with layers of transparent
oil paint, almost like a performance, adding and wiping off, veiling
and unveiling an image and constantly restructuring form. Marks
are kept from previous layers; these constantly keep the painting
alive. Like Jackson Pollock, I am the figure within the painting,
constantly searching to attain a certain kind of communication between
the elements in the painting and myself. It can be an immensely
exciting experience and equally daunting. The Painting is constantly
evolving until completion.
During the last five years I have
been fascinated by the effect of the Earth Mother on our pre-historic
ancestors, whilst studying for a Fine Arts Degree. The human form
can materialise in my work as Gaia. She appears, as she was in pre-historic
times, in supreme command of the whole volatile dance of experience,
language and meaning, expressed in ritual and ceremony. She might
appear headless, as a limb or as a complete, nurturing and heavy-breasted
mother figure. I look to a new kind of art, a Shamanistic pre-historic
art re-discovered. I aspire to a time before the written word, when
simple images could thrill or frighten with a strange sense of possibility."
