Sam Jukes - Never Silent
Moved by his environment and a fascination with sound, Sam Jukes' paintings are both a reflection of and an emotional response to the world around him.
His soundscapes grow from a combination of natural, ‘found' samples of sound and the electronic manipulation of these sounds.
Similarly, Sam's paintings act as a conversation between sound and image and express his emotional response to both his own soundscapes and the music and compositions of other artists.
The use of bare canvas, graphite, resin and oils creates a dynamic contrast of textures and mediums and, despite the complex nature of the materials which he has used, a simplicity and purity is achieved through composition.
The paintings take on a three dimensional appearance through strongly contrasting surfaces. Oil paint applied very deliberately to resin creates shadows on the surface of the canvas, emphasizing a feeling of depth, distance and permanence.
The resin takes on a preservative role, encapsulating and conserving the painting within.
“Much as photography captures a split second in time, I feel the resin enables the same quality, but for an interpretation of sound.”

Sam's use of colour also emphasizes his appreciation of sound.
In places colour seeps across the painting as though the canvas has been dipped. Quite in contrast to the little cells of colour which bounce across the surface.
These contrasts and layers of paint act as a reflection of the multi-faceted and layered nature of sound, and when seen in relation to one another they present a strange, and yet beautifully harmonious, composition.
